2022 Flooring Trends

2022 Flooring Trends

Entering a new year is a great time to start those home improvement and renovation projects you may have been putting off until after the holidays. Whether you’re going big like giving your bathroom a complete makeover or looking to update your living room with a pop of color, flooring is an important part of any project. From hardwood refinishing to carpet colors and everything in between, read on for what’s trending in flooring for 2022!

Hardwood

Have you read our Fall 2021 Hardwood Trends blog post? If not, check it out here! Many of last Fall’s trends are continuing into 2022, but some new ones are emerging as well. Wide plank flooring is still “going strong,” carrying the rustic trend into 2022. This year will also see the continuation of the “Japandi” style, a conglomeration of both Scandinavian and Japanese styles. As Uniquely Amtico describes, “The fusion between Scandi and Japanese design remains a big trend for 2022. Translated into flooring through light and contemporary woods with organic textures, Japandi focuses on bringing out the silver and grey tones to give the space a stylish and minimal yet comforting feel.” 2022 will see the light and cool-toned trend of 2021 go even lighter, seeing more whites and beiges. We’ll also continue moving away from a glossy appearance in favor of flatter finishes. However, unlike last year, non-traditional laying patterns like parquet and herringbone are making a comeback. Sticking with the light and neutral color palette will really allow the geometrical floor patterns to be the focal piece in your room or home. As Decorilla explains here, “For natural light to be at its best, light floors can do their part to bounce light across the room. It feeds a more minimalistic look, especially if you have a few brighter colors that you want to display. Make sure to warm it up with soft textures and your choice of curated artwork.”

Tile

This year’s bright, minimalist trend translates to tile as well. However, unlike hardwood, glossier finishes are coming back when it comes to tile and laminate. As Herts Carpets explains, “[Semi-gloss] has a gloss of 45-55% which gives a sleek, modern appearance.  It is ideal for kitchen and bathroom areas and makes the room seem brighter.” Luxury vinyl plank and tile will also continue to be popular choices, with more options made to look like natural stone and concrete.2 Authentic natural materials like stone, concrete, pebble, and cork remain on-trend, as well as funky shapes and patterns such as hexagons, mosaics, and herringbone. Bright-colored tiles can be paired with neutral walls to let the floor be the star of your bathroom or kitchen. According to Big Bathroom Inspiration, “The warm and earthy tones of classic terracotta are on the rise and growing in popularity. Looking beautiful when combined with Terrazzo, shades range from warm clay and apricot hues through to red brick and fire orange. This tile colour and design will make a huge impact in 2022 and can be stunning when paired with brushed copper and bronze brassware – both of which you will see much more of next year.”6

Carpet

Warm, bright colored carpet and rugs can also be used as a statement piece in contrast to light and neutral wood floors and/or walls. “Using Victorian-inspired designs or colourful patterns in one single area – such as around the kitchen island, across the hallway or around the fireplace – is a beautiful way to highlight a particular architecture feature or piece of furniture and give the space lots of character.”2 However, when it comes to carpet, there are a number of ways you can go while still staying on trend if that’s something you’re looking for. From simple and neutral to bold and bright, here are some tips from Hackrea to keep in mind for each carpet trend in 2022:

If simple and clean is what you’re going for, opt for light neutrals like white and beige to let other elements of the space shine, or consider a muted blue or green for a calming pop of color. For a vintage flair, consider a mix of old and new pieces to add a modern twist; pair an oriental rug or faded carpet with contemporary furniture or art pieces.7 Don’t be afraid to experiment with color, either! In addition to soothing neutrals, soft pink is a trending color that will also add warmth and comfort to your space. For cheery inspiration on drab winter days, consider a sunny yellow! Bold designs and patterns are also in: think big florals, chunky stripes, and funky geometrical shapes.

When it comes to flooring, 2022 promises a variety of materials, styles, and colors. There’s something for everyone, from retro to contemporary, mellow to vibrant, and uniform to eclectic. Whether you’re looking for inspiration for a major renovation or just for a few tips to modernize your space, an important consideration in any flooring update is maintenance and care, especially in the winter months here in New England.
